EL ESTILO INGLES / THE ENGLISH STYLE

 

 

Uno de los estilos más característicos de la elegancia masculina es el estilo británico, comúnmente conocido como estilo inglés.

One of the most distinctive styles of masculine elegance is the British style, commonly known as English style.

 

 

Hace pocas fechas escribíamos sobre el ecléctico estilo francés y aportábamos las notas esenciales que definen su características particulares. En esta oportunidad nos centraremos en el estilo inglés.

 

We wrote a few weeks ago about the eclectic French style and the essential notes that define its characteristics. This time we will focus on the English style.

 

 

 

 

Este estilo es conocido por todo el mundo. Cualquier persona, sin tener ni siquiera conocimientos sobre normas básicas de elegancia, puede sin ninguna dificultad identificar en una imagen el estilo que encarna la pura esencia británica en el vestir.

 

This style is well known by everyone. Anyone, without even knowledge of basic standards of elegance, can without any difficulty identifying an image in the style that embodies pure Britishness dress.

 

 

Este modelo británico es el modelo que se toma como paradigma del estilo más elegante y es generalmente imitado. El estilo británico se centra en la discreción más formal, con estricta sujeción a los cánones más tradicionales de la elegancia, sin hacer concesiones a estridencias de formas ni colores.

The British model is the model that is taken as a paradigm of the most elegant and is generally imitated. The British style focuses on the more formal option, with strict adherence to the traditional canons of elegance, without making concessions to strident forms.

 

 

En la City ya no resulta sencillo toparnos, como antaño, con el típico personaje inglés de traje oscuro con bombín y paraguas. La imagen del caballero inglés en muchas ocasiones es más mítica que real. En la City coexiste una heterogeneidad de estilos. En mis múltiples viajes a Londres he podido siempre constatar que la gente viste muy bien o viste muy mal. Lamentablemente las personas que visten muy bien constituyen una gran minoría.

 

In the City is not easy find, as before, with the typical English people wearing dark suit with bowler hat and umbrella. The image of the English gentleman often is more mythical than real. In the City coexists heterogeneity of styles. In my many trips to London I could always find that people wear dresses very well or very badly. Unfortunately people who dress well are a large minority.

 

 

 

 

El clásico estilo inglés consiste, de conformidad con el carácter británico,  fundamentalmente en pasar desapercibido. En la zona de negocios de Londres los caballeros siempre llevan trajes de color oscuro, fundamentalmente azul marino y no arriesgan en sus combinaciones. El caballero inglés valora más el fondo que la forma, prioriza la calidad de las telas sobre las innovaciones estéticas, no quiere diferenciarse del resto, porque las normas en el buen vestir son, para él, estrictas y no están hechas para vulnerarse, sino para cumplirse.

 

The classic English style is, according to the British character, essentially unnoticed. In the business area of London gentlemen always wear dark suits, navy and essentially no risk in their combinations. The Englishman values the background form, prioritizes quality fabrics on the aesthetic innovations, he doesn’t differ from the rest, because the rules about dressing well for him are strict and are not made to be violated, but to be fulfilled.

 

 

En las tabernas más tradicionales del centro de Londres, como The Red lion en cualquiera de sus cuatro versiones en Waverton, Crown passage,  Parliament Street o Duke of York Street, o mi favorita,  Ye Olde Cheshire cheese en Ely place, se dan siempre cita al salir del trabajo todos los ejecutivos, donde incluso acuden a almorzar a mediodía. Pues bien, la sensación es la de asistir a una procesión uniformada, habida cuenta que todos los caballeros visten igual.

 

In the most traditional taverns in central London, including The Red lion in any of its four versions in Waverton, Crown passage, Parliament Street o Duke of York Street, or my favorite, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Ely Place, where all men always go to have lunch at noon, the feeling is to attend a uniformed procession, as all the men dress alike.

 

 

En este sentido debo señalar que las sastrerías de Savile Row que he tenido oportunidad de conocer no hacen concesiones a innovaciones en los cortes del traje. El criterio que mantienen es no salirse de las pautas tradicionales.

 

I must confess that the tailors of Savile Row I've had a chance to meet not make concessions to innovations in the courts of the suit. They keep the traditional patterns.

 

 

 

El estilo inglés es lo más alejado que existe en cuanto a la moda se refiere, por lo que no se toleran nuevas aportaciones ni nada que pueda ser considerado estridente. 

 

The English style is that there far as fashion is concerned, so that new contributions or anything that could be considered not tolerate loud.

 

 

Las chaquetas inglesas son las más armadas y estructuradas. No se renuncia a las hombreras ni a los necesarios acabados del interior de la chaqueta, y los bolsillos serán siempre inclinados y no rectos. Tienen en uno de sus lados dos bolsillos, el normal y uno mas pequeño sobre este denominado cerillero.  La chaqueta es entallada en la cintura, y las solapas no serán nunca anchas.

 

English jackets are the most armed and structured. No waiver of the shoulder pads or the necessary finishes inside the jacket, and pockets are always inclined and not straight. The jacket is form fitted at the waist, and the flaps will never ease.

 

 

Los trajes se lucirán predominantemente con chaleco, de tal modo que el inglés es el único estilo que se caracteriza por usar con frecuencia el tres piezas.

 

The suits will look predominantly waistcoat, so that English style is the only style that is characterized by frequent use of the three pieces.

 

 

 

En cuanto a los pantalones el estilo inglés exige que sean sin vuelta, nunca será corto ni estrecho, debiendo mantener el talle elevado.

 

The english trousers have not hem out, never will be short and narrow, and must maintain high waistline.

 

 

La camisa será predominantemente blanca o azul y en algún caso de rayas. Sin olvidarnos de la tradicional camisa de rayas con cuello y puños blancos, que es muy de tradición inglesa. No se concibe camisa sin puño doble y gemelos.

 

The shirt is predominantly white or blue and striped in some cases. Without forgetting the traditional striped shirt with white collar and cuffs, which is very English tradition. No shirt is always with cufflinks.

 

El pañuelo de la chaqueta permanecerá siempre doblado paralelo al borde del bolsillo.  Se usan corbatas siempre discretas y no es infrecuente la utilización de pajarita, algo que no existe en otros estilos.

 

The handkerchief folded jacket will always remain parallel to the edge of the pocket. Always discreet ties are used and it is not uncommon to use bow tie, something that does not exist in other styles.

 

 

A parte de la apariencia, el estilo inglés exige unos tejidos de alta calidad generalmente más gruesos que los que utilizamos en latitudes mediterráneas, sin olvidar que existe un tejido típicamente británico como el tweed.

 

The English style requires a high-quality fabrics generally thicker than those used in Mediterranean latitudes, without forgetting that there is a typical British fabric like tweed.

 

 

 

En cuanto a los zapatos el estilo inglés admite con el traje únicamente el tradicional modelo oxford.

 

As for the English style shoes with the suit only supports the traditional model oxford.
